Katsina lacks English, Maths teachers —Gov Masari

Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari, has raised the alarm over the scarcity of English and Mathematics teachers in the state.

The governor also decried the teacher-pupil ratio in the state, saying that it had accounted for pupils’ poor performance in public examinations.

Masari stated this when he visited the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, in Abuja.

The visit, he said, was to seek the organisation’s support for the training of students in the state-owned colleges of education and polytechnics.

He said, “Our performance in almost all the national public examination is usually below 10 per cent. Our focus is on content development because in Kastina State, we do not have adequate English and Mathematics teachers and we believe with the challenge, we cannot really move ahead as a state.

“The dearth in English and Mathematics teachers is one area we are having serious challenges in the state and we want TETfund to focus more on the colleges of education to enable them to produce quality teachers.

“You cannot restore value without education. This is the pathetic situation in Katsina State. We want to restore the lost glory of the state in the education sector. If we can give our children the right education, then we can go to sleep.

Masari, who called for improved support for schools, said the gesture would greatly reduce the pressure on the state.

“He said, “The provision of infrastructure, training and capacity building will take the pressure off the state government as it would now have more funds to spend on the foundation level of education. That is the primary, junior secondary school and the secondary schools.

“Again, if there is improvement in the capacities of the lecturers, the colleges would start to produce degree holders and master’s degree holders in education. We have an over 20-year-old college of education that is still producing NCE graduates. It shows clearly that there is lack of capacity and infrastructure at the institution. This is where we want TETfund to intervene.”

Bagoro promised that the organisation would assist the state.

He said, “I promise that we will play our role at the tertiary level so that the government can divert its resources to the basic education. We will collaborate with states that have created institutions in order to strengthen them. I must say that one of the indices of performance of TETfund today is the improved rating and ranking of Nigerian universities in Africa and across the global.”
